Palisades Reservoir Boondocking

Palisades Reservoir Boondocking

Alpine, WY / Idaho border (near Grand Teton NP)

An amazing free boondocking spot right on the water with no hookups and unbeatable views of the reservoir and surrounding peaks. First-come, first-served and open seasonally — find it on the iOverlander app. A fantastic base for visiting Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson area.

Rainbow Point Campground

Rainbow Point Campground

West Yellowstone, MT (Custer Gallatin National Forest)

Very dusty, but an unbeatable location for visiting the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The non-power sites are first-come, first-served and the primitive sites run just $6/night. It's a longer drive to get settled in, but the proximity to Hebgen Lake and the park gate makes it worth it for an adventuring family.

Mt. Desert Narrows Camping Resort

Mt. Desert Narrows Camping Resort

Bar Harbor, ME

Big Rig Friendly? Absolutely! Mt. Desert Narrows was one of the easiest campgrounds we've navigated during our New England trip. The roads were wide enough for our 40-foot fifth wheel, sites were easy to access, and getting in and out of the campground was stress-free. If you're traveling with a large RV, this is one campground you can confidently add to your list. Location The location couldn't have been better. Situated just north of Bar Harbor, we found it to be the perfect home base for exploring Acadia National Park while still being close to Ellsworth for groceries, fuel, restaurants, and other everyday necessities. Another huge bonus is the Island Explorer, Acadia's free shuttle system. You can leave your vehicle at camp and ride the shuttle throughout Bar Harbor and into Acadia National Park, making sightseeing incredibly easy during the busy summer months. If you have an America the Beautiful Pass, you'll love the flexibility of being able to come and go from Acadia National Park throughout the day without worrying about additional entrance fees. Campground Amenities The campground is peaceful, well-maintained, and an excellent place to unwind after a full day of adventure. Whether you're spending the day hiking, biking, or exploring the coast, it's a relaxing place to return to each evening. Ride the Line Adventures Nearby 🌅 Cadillac Mountain Sunrise — One of the highlights of our trip was watching the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain. Reservations are required during peak season, so make sure to reserve your sunrise pass well in advance. Watching the first rays of sunlight hit the Atlantic Ocean is an unforgettable experience. ✨ Stargazing at Sand Beach — Don't miss Sand Beach after dark! We found some of the best stargazing of our travels here. During the summer, the National Park Service also hosts seasonal Wednesday evening ranger-led science programs, making it a fun and educational activity for the whole family. 🚲 Schoodic Peninsula Loop — We rented traditional (non-electric) bikes and rode the 8.1-mile Schoodic Peninsula Loop. The ride includes several moderately challenging climbs, but the breathtaking coastal views make every hill worthwhile. Non-electric bikes gave us much more flexibility — e-bikes cannot be transported on many of Acadia's shuttle systems, so regular bikes allowed us to explore multiple areas throughout our visit. 🚴 Acadia Carriage Roads — The famous Carriage Roads are an absolute must. These historic gravel roads wind through forests, around crystal-clear lakes, and across beautiful stone bridges that are unique to Acadia National Park. They're perfect for families and cyclists looking to experience the park away from vehicle traffic. Family Fun 🪓 Timber Tina's Great Maine Lumberjack Show – A fun, interactive show showcasing traditional lumberjack skills with plenty of audience participation. 🏴‍☠️ Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf – One of the nicest mini-golf courses we've visited and a great evening activity after a day in the park. Food If you're a seafood lover, you're in for a treat! We enjoyed several fantastic local restaurants, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. Just be prepared — Bar Harbor dining is some of the most expensive we've experienced during our travels, especially during peak tourist season. It's worth budgeting for a few memorable meals while you're there. Final Thoughts Mt. Desert Narrows is an outstanding campground and one of our favorite New England destinations. Its easy access for big rigs, proximity to both Acadia National Park and Ellsworth, and endless opportunities for biking, hiking, sightseeing, and family adventures make it an ideal base camp for exploring coastal Maine. From watching the sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain and biking the iconic Carriage Roads to stargazing at Sand Beach and enjoying fresh Maine seafood, this stop delivered unforgettable memories.
